What is Ridesharing?

R I D E S H A R I N G  is not a new form of transportation. It is simply a way to move  more people in fewer motor vehicles.  It is sharing rides... using any mode of transportation other than one  person driving alone. It is carpooling, vanpooling, using any form of  transit (bus or rail), even walking, jogging, and bicycling.  Oahu's ever-increasing vehicle population and our continued reliance on the single-occupant vehicle as a primary form of transportation are resulting in  more traffic, more congestion, longer travel times, and a strain on our  environment. Moving people, goods and services efficiently and effectively is important to the quality of life and economic vitality of this island. By working together now, we are protecting our transportation future.

LOTMA, a non-profit organization, serves as a transportation resource center and provides
R I D E S H A R I N G information and assistance as a free, public service to the community. As an advocate for the region's mobility needs, the organization also functions as a vital mechanism to improve communication and cooperation between public and private sectors and facilitate the development and implementation of new and/or improved transportation services and facilities. Benefits of Ridesharing
Ridesharing is more than a transportation alternative. It is also...

A Healthy Alternative
Sharing your commute, even once a week, is good for your health. Studies show that solo drivers are more likely to have higher blood pressure and heart rates, lowered body tolerance and even short-term memory loss as a result of the stress and tension of driving in stop-and-go traffic day after day.

Travel time is more relaxed. By not having to concentrate on driving in traffic, you are free to read, catch up on work, take a nap, or do absolutely nothing but enjoy the ride!

A Cost Saving Alternative
The more you rideshare, the greater the savings. The cost of sharing a ride in a bus, van or a car is much less than the 47-62 cents per mile it costs to drive. Consider the savings a tax-free raise. And your car will last longer, with less chance of being in an accident. It might even eliminate the need to buy that second or third car.

Ridesharing also helps the business environment. Reduced traffic means more  timely delivery of goods and services and better work productivity and  morale. Reduced employee parking needs means more space for customers.

An Energy Saving Alternative
Ridesharing activities can result in reducing the amount of fuel we consume, reducing our dependence on foreign oil and the likelihood of another energy crisis.

An Environmentally-Healthy Alternative
Every Ridesharing trip means fewer motor vehicles on the road. Fewer vehicles means less pollution, cleaner air to breathe and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

A Ridesharing Alternative
Ridesharing , even once a week, can make a difference in reducing traffic congestion. Every carpool can mean from 1-4 less cars on the road. Each vanpool can remove 6-14 cars. Each buspool can mean a reduction of 30-50 cars. Public transit (bus or rail) offers even greater carrying capacity.

Carpools
Carpools consist of sharing rides with two or more persons (family, friends, co-workers) in private or company automobiles to and from work or school. You can decide how often to carpool and whether driving responsibilities will be rotated or only one car will be used and costs of gas and parking shared.

Vanpools
Vanpools work like an express bus on a smaller scale. They serve seven to fifteen passengers who pay monthly fares that cover the cost of owning or leasing a van and its upkeep. The vanpool driver, another commuter, usually rides free in exchange for driving, collecting fares and keeping the vehicle clean and in good repair.

Buspools
A buspool typically carries between 30 and 50 passengers for a limited number of destination stops. Buspools or subscription bus service offer guaranteed seat service and are usually third-party operated. Monthly fares for this service, while higher than for public transit, are lower than the total cost of driving and parking a car.

Public Transit
Using public transit is the least expensive way to get to work or school. Any form of public transit, whether bus or rail, offers shared-ride travel at a very low cost to the user.
