Carpooling
Carpools consist of sharing rides with two or more persons (family, friends, co-workers) in private or company automobiles to and from work or school. You can decide how often to carpool and whether driving responsibilities will be rotated or only one car will be used and costs of gas and parking shared.
With gas prices
at an all-time
high, there's never
been a better
time to form a
carpool, and LOTMA can help!
Apply for a free
LOTMA
carpool
matchlist
and join a
carpool.
The State
Department of
Transportation
(DOT) can also
help. To
be entered into
the DOT Oahu
carpool
database, simply
go to
www.state.hi.us/dot/publicaffairs/rideshare/match.htm
and follow the
prompts.
If you're
interested in
other ways to
find a carpool
partner, you may
want to visit
these sites:
www.erideshare.com
and
www.carpoolworld.com.
These are
international
ridesharing
sites and are
not in anyway
associated with
LOTMA. But they
do have some
Oahu residents
listed and you
may be able to
find the right
carpool partner.
Emergency Ride
Home Program
It's great to
carpool to work,
but what if you
have an
emergency--you
might be
stranded! No
worries! We'll
give you a ride
home--if you're
a participant in
the LOTMA
Emergency Ride
Home Program.
It's a special
incentive to
encourage you to
travel to work
without your
car--without the
fear of being
stranded.
Helpful Hints for Carpooling
1)
Meet with your
potential
carpool partner
over coffee or
lunch to check
compatibility.
2) Establish
morning and
evening pickup
times and
locations.
3)
Arrange driving
schedules a
month at a time,
but allow for
flexibility.
4)
Set some ground
rules about
talking,
smoking, eating
and radio play.
5)
Call your
carpool partner
ahead of time if
you're not
planning to use
the carpool one
day or if you're
working late.
6)
Be considerate
of others. Other
people's habits
may not be
yours, but
making your
carpool a
success means
learning to live
with them. When
you're driving,
remember you
have others to
consider.
7)
Figure out the
costs, including
gas and parking.
Cost sharing is
unnecessary when
the driving is
rotated equally.
8)
Whether driving
or riding, be on
time. Your
tardiness may
make others late
for work or
dinner.
9)
Write down the
names, e-mail
and telephone
numbers of your
fellow poolers
so you can reach
each other
quickly!
10)
Check with your
insurance
company to
determine if you
have adequate
coverage. You
may also be
eligible for a
discount if your
average mileage
is reduced!
Remember, carpooling is flexible. Each carpool is different. What is most important is that everyone in the carpool agrees and is comfortable with each other.
